5 ‘Roped together’ climbers die in Austrian Alps ‘fall’

Five helicopters were dispatched to Mount Gabler, east of Innsbruck, as a rescue operation was launched to save six mountaineers.

Five mountain climbers have died and another was left seriously injured after an apparent accident in the Austrian Alps.

The Austrian Red Cross said it appeared the climbers were roped together and fell from Mount Gabler, east of Innsbruck.

Five helicopters were dispatched to the scene as a rescue operation was launched.

Nationalities of the victims have not yet been determined and it remains unclear how the climbers died, a Red Cross official told Austria Press Agency.

It came as three mountain climbers were killed while climbing a glacier in the Italian Alps.

Man shot and wounded after attacking police officer at Notre Dame

A man has been shot and injured after reportedly attacking a police officer with a hammer at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

Police in the France capital warned people to stay away from the site, on the Ile de Cite island on the River Seine, on via Twitter message.

The officer was injured during the assault, before the attacker was shot by colleagues, police confirmed.

The area in front of the cathedral has been sealed off, with French TV reporting that tourists were fleeing the scene.

Paris is on high alert after a series of Islamic extremist attacks in recent years.

North Korea threatens nuclear war with Australia saying the country is ‘within range’

North Korea has issued a blunt message to Australia, saying the nation is ‘within range’ of a nuclear strike and that following US moves in the region would be a ‘suicidal act’.

‘If Australia persists in following the US moves to isolate and stifle the DPRK and remains a shock brigade of the US master, this will be a suicidal act of coming within the range of the nuclear strike of the strategic force of the DPRK,’ the report said.

‘The Australian Foreign Minister had better think twice about the consequences to be entailed by her reckless tongue-lashing before flattering the US.’

Earlier this week Ms Bishop said on the ABC’s AM program that North Korea’s nuclear weapons program posed a ‘serious threat’ to Australia, unless it was stopped by the international community.

BREAKING NEWS: At least 20 children are killed after a bus crashes into a truck and bursts into flames

The minibus they were travelling on collided with a truck on a road between the towns of Bronkhorstspruit and Verena, about 70 kilometres (45 miles) from Pretoria.

Pictures from the scene showed the bus turned upside down on the side of the road and with smoke pouring out of it.

ER24 medical service said responders found about 13 children trapped inside the vehicle after its flames were put out.

The other children were found outside the minibus.

The emergency service said the cause of the crash is not yet known.
