Avon Descent 2017 WA UPDATE

JASON Graham has kept up the love affair South Africans have with the Avon Descent by taking out the blue ribbon solo kayak title at this year’s 45th staging of the iconic river race in 9 hours 51 seconds.

The 38 year-old from Pietermaritzburg said the punishing 124 kilometres white-water event was the most exhausting paddling he has ever done.

“The size of the rapids today took me by surprise,” he said.

“I didn’t have a clue where I was going through them.

“I have to thank Matt (Dean) for showing me the way.”

South African born Dean and partner James Morfitt crossed the Riverside Gardens finish line in Bayswater in their double kayak just ahead of Graham but the South African was given line honours on adjusted time.

Graham who will return to South Africa to compete in next month’s world championships in the sub-veterans class is unsure about returning to defend his Avon title in 2018.

“It was just such a tough tough race today,” he said.

Meanwhile a boy was taken to hospital after falling from a bridge while watching the event. The boy was among spectators on the Bells Rapids walk bridge when he fell on to rocks below.

Emergency services and Avon Descent event organisers helped to lift him on a stretcher.

The nine-year-old boy will have his injuries assessed in hospital.

There were 370 competitors in this year’s event, 25 per cent down on 2016 entrants due to low water levels only boostedin the last two weeks due to good rains.

#PERTH Northern Suburbs Park searched in search for wanted gunman

THERE is a hunt on in Perth’s northern suburbs this afternoon for Shawn Adam Newton, who is wanted by police over the death of a woman found in a car on the freeway on the weekend.

Newton is considered armed and dangerous and police have swamped the Karrinyup area in the search for him after a number of reported sightings over the past few days.

Speaking from Karrinyup, 7 News Perth’s Grant Taylor said police raced to the Trigg Bushland Reserve at about 3.30pm with lights and sirens flashing.

“They were brought here in a really hurry,” he said.

“It is understood there had been another sighting, not confirmed, here yesterday.”

London attack: Body believed to be French tourist Xavier Thomas recovered from Thames

Detectives searching for French national Xavier Thomas, 45, who disappeared during the London Bridge terror attack, have recovered a body from the Thames near Limehouse. His next of kin have been informed, Scotland Yard said. It was believed Mr Thomas was thrown into the river by the attackers van and drowned. He would be the eighth victim of the attack. His girlfriend was seriously injured in the collision. More follows

Flynn and Trump lawyer subpoenaed over Russia investigation

The House intelligence committee approved subpoenas for two individuals as a part of the ongoing investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential election: former national security adviser Michael Flynn and President Trump‘s attorney, Michael Cohen.

The subpoenas require both Flynn and Cohen to testify before the committee, as well as turn over personal documents and business records.

“We hope and expect that anyone called to testify or provide documents will comply with that request, so that we may gain all the information within the scope of our investigation,” Reps. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, and Adam Schiff, D-California, said in a statement. “We will continue to pursue this investigation wherever the facts may lead.”

Both Flynn and Cohen have resisted the committee’s requests for their testimony.

Wangaratta siege ends with two found dead

A siege in the Victorian town of Wangaratta has ended in tragedy with two people found dead in a home hours after a gunshot was heard.

Police were called to Belle Avenue about 12.50pm on Tuesday after reports of a gunshot.

Two adults and six children left the house unharmed shortly after the shot was fired and are currently safe with police.

A siege ensued with police attempting to make contact with the man believed to be holed up in the house with a woman.

Officers entered the property about 5.10pm and found the pair dead.

The area was in lockdown throughout the day, with police surrounding the house and cordoned off the avenue.

Nearby residents in Belle, Irwin and Garnet avenues and Appin Street were asked to remain inside their homes.

Nearby St Michael’s Anglican Church first counsellor Luigi Bonacci says the neighbourhood is “tight-knit” and the deaths will have a big effect.

“It will be a sad time for everybody and people will be wary about what’s happened because where we are is a very tight-knit area, there are a lot of families and young kids,” he told AAP.

“Everyone seems pretty happy around here. This is not a good thing.”

Mr Bonacci says he is not sure who the people involved are yet, because police prevented residents getting close to the scene throughout the day.

Homicide Squad detectives from Melbourne have been called in to help local police investigate the deaths.

Police say they are not looking for anyone in relation to the shooting.
