Microsoft’s speech recognition system hits a new accuracy milestone

Microsoft announced today that its conversational speech recognition system has reached a 5.1% error rate, its lowest so far.

This surpasses the 5.9% error rate reached last year by a group of researchers from Microsoft Artificial Intelligence and Research and puts its accuracy on par with professional human transcribers who have advantages like the ability to listen to text several times.

Both studies transcribed recordings from the Switchboard corpus, a collection of about 2,400 telephone conversations that have been used by researchers to test speech recognition systems since the early 1990s. The new study was performed by a group of researchers at Microsoft AI and Research with the goal of achieving the same level of accuracy as a group of human transcribers who were able to listen to what they were transcribing several times, access its conversational context and work with other transcribers.

Overall, researchers from the latest study reduced the error rate by about 12 percent compared to last year’s findings by improving the neural net-based acoustic and language models of Microsoft’s speech recognition system. Notably, they also enabled its speech recognizer to use entire conversations, which let it adapt its transcriptions to context and predict what words or phrases were likely to come next, the way humans do when talking to one another.

Microsoft’s speech recognition system is used in services like Cortana, Presentation Translator and Microsoft Cognitive Services.

Senator Nick Xenophon has called for an urgent audit of all high-rise buildings across Australia which are suspected of containing non-compliant building materials.

The independent senator says any cladding that doesn’t meet the national standards should be removed from buildings to avoid a similar blaze to the one which engulfed London’s Grenfell Tower yesterday.

So far, 12 people have been reported dead while many are still missing after the 24-storey residential building in North Kensington went up in flames overnight (local time).

While the cause of the blaze is not yet known, early investigations suggest new aluminium composite cladding – installed to make the building more energy efficient – might have aided the spread.

Senator Xenophon said the fire should serve as wake-up call for Australian authorities…

The Walking Dead season 7 teases blood-filled finale: “Well, there are losses’

The Walking Dead season seven finale is less than a month away and showrunner Scott Gimple has hammered home what fans already knew: characters will die. However, Gimple has promised that instead of being a “…very claustrophobic descent into darkness” like the season six finale, this yeat’s final episode “…is more expansive – in tone and location and characters.” There will also be lighter moments peppered in among the horror.

Gimple told TVLine: “[Season 6’s finale] was the noose tightening and things getting darker and darker. This season’s finale has darkness and light, real horrific moments, betrayal, and real moments of beauty, redemption, love and friendship.

“It’s sort of the panoply of human and Walking Dead experience.”

Now the world has expanded to include characters from the Hilltop, the Kingdom, the Saviours – even the Junkyard – it’s a sure bet that the body count will be higher than usual.
