Charities, non-profits pull events from Mar-a-Lago amid Charlottesville controversy
A number of high profile charitable organizations have withdrawn fundraising events and galas from President Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida amid growing backlash to the president’s response to the deadly violence that broke out in Charlottesville last weekend.
Today, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army all confirmed to ABC News that they are no longer going to be holding their fundraising events at Mar-a-Lago this upcoming year.
“The Salvation Army relies heavily on fundraising events like The Holiday Snow Ball in Palm Beach to further our mission of helping those in need through a range of social services including food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, clothing and shelter for the homeless, and opportunities for the underprivileged,” the Salvation Army wrote in a statement, “Because the conversation has shifted away from the purpose of this event, we will not host it at Mar-a-Lago.”
Yesterday, the American Cancer Society — which has held events at Mar-a-Lago since 2009 — along with the Cleveland Clinic, both announced they were pulling fundraising events scheduled at the club for next year.
“Our values and commitment to diversity are critical as we work to address the impact of cancer in every community. It has become increasingly clear that the challenge to those values is outweighing other business considerations,” the American Cancer Society wrote in a statement.
These organizations join a growing list of groups that are changing the venues for their fundraising events, many saying they want to avoid being politicized.
The Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Leaders in Furthering Education (LIFE), have also said they are changing venues for events previously scheduled at Mar-a-Lago…

Golf: Vegas defends Canadian Open title with playoff win
(Reuters) – Jhonattan Vegas emphatically ended a poor run of form by successfully defending his Canadian Open title with a playoff victory over Charley Hoffman at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville on Sunday.
Venezuelan Vegas, who missed the cut in his last five PGA Tour starts, tapped in for birdie at the first playoff hole — the par-five 18th — moments before overnight leader Hoffman failed to hole out from a greenside bunker.
“To repeat in Canada it doesn’t get any better,” said Vegas, whose seven-under-par 65 gave him a 21-under total of 267.
“I came in here on a really long stretch of five missed cuts, not playing great golf, did a little bit of change on my Mizuno irons this week and it was magic to be honest.”
Both players started the playoff by sending their drives into fairway bunkers but Vegas found some luck when his second shot took a chunk out of the lip of the left bunker yet still carried just off the far edge of the green.
His ball settled in the same area it did in regulation, only that time he chipped it well past the hole and then two-putted for par.

Red tape killing life in Perth’s CBD, MP John Carey says
NEW MP for Perth John Carey has labelled the CBD “dead” and boring during an impassioned plea for red tape to be slashed to help city traders jazz up the streets.
Andy Hepenstall, of Hay Street coffee stand Cafe Vinyl, said he paid $2000 a year for three kerbside tables and chairs, which he considered to be “additional rent”.
Mr Hepenstall said reducing the cost burden would allow CBD businesses to lower prices, employ more people and increase the vibrancy.
“If you look up and down the streets at the moment it’s pretty drab, pretty boring,” he said.
Ms Scaffidi said council resolved in November to review the alfresco dining local law, and a public survey was launched on June 1.
“This feedback will be used to determine a new policy setting for council’s consideration, and it would be premature to amend the policy without full consideration of all feedback provided by the community,” she said.

Everyone loved him: Collingwood legend Lou Richards mourned funeral Melbourne
Members of the public, politicians, footballing greats, friends and family have turned out in force to farewell Aussie Rules legend Lou Richards at a state funeral.
A former Collingwood premiership captain and legendary media personality, the 94-year-old passed away peacefully at his nursing home in Melbourne last Monday.
But it wasn’t just on the field where Richards built his legacy. In retirement he was a household name to millions of Australians with his move into TV and print media.
Hundreds gathered in St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne on Wednesday, while many more watched on in nearby Federation Square to remember the player, performer and publican, who touched the lives of so many.
Speaking first Lou’s eldest daughter Nicole Morrison said her father would have been humbled by the public response to his death.
‘I did not realise the enormity of Lou’s popularity or the way he touched so many lives in so many ways,’ Mrs Morrison told the packed church.
‘Lou was the most loyal person I have ever known. If you were on team Lou or Lou’s friend, then you had his undying loyalty.
‘He would be humbled by this response. But only for a short time.’
Ned Morrison remembered the moment they realised their grandfather was famous.
‘Whilst sitting on grandpa’s lap, we watched as “Louie the Lip” appeared on screen,’ Mr Morrison said.
‘This was most troubling for Amy. How could he be sitting next to her and on TV at the same time?
He also told of the embarrassment his older sister Lucy felt when a swarm of fanfare would surround her grandfather whenever he would pick her up from school.
‘The only problem for Lucy was her realisation that her grandpa was more appealing to teenage boys at school than she was,’ Mr Morrison joked.
Growing up in the shadows of Collingwood’s home ground Victoria Park, Lou’s family had a strong connection to the club, with his brother, grandfather and two uncles all pulling on the black and white guernsey.
After hangin up the boots in 1955, he fronted the program World of Sport, where his witty banter with co-hosts Jack Dyer and Bob Davis earned him the nickname ‘Louie the lip’.
Richards was elected into the AFL Hall of Fame in 1996, and into Collingwood’s club Hall of Fame eight years later in 2004.
The club erected a statue of Richards outside their Olympic Park training facility in Melbourne in 2014.
‘I never thought I’d be so famous,’ the always humble Richards said.

Reality TV star: Will Hayden jailed for life for raping two young women
Former reality TV star Will Hayden has been sentenced to life in prison for raping two girls in Louisiana.
The 51-year-old was sentenced on Thursday to two life sentences, plus 40 years to run consecutively, and he will not be eligible for probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.
Hayden, who appeared on the show, Sons of Guns, was found guilty last month on two counts of aggravated rape and one count of forcible rape for abusing two young girls.
The Advocate reports one of Hayden’s two victims was in court on Thursday when the sentence was handed down.
The 37-year-old woman smiled and said ‘thank God’ as she left the courtroom. The younger victim, who is now 15, did not attend the sentencing.
The older woman, who now has three children and is engaged, testified at Hayden’s trial that he raped her twice in the early 1990s when she was 12 and 13. She told the court Hayden – who was in his 20s at the time – raped her the first time in his apartment after they smoked marijuana.
‘The next thing I remember is him on top of me,’ she testified in April, according to the newspapaer.
‘I was scared. I didn’t know what was happening. I wanted to leave and I couldn’t.

It hurt. I couldn’t physically do anything. I just remember thinking I wanted this to end.’
His younger victim testified she was raped repeatedly in 2013 and 2014 when she was 11 and 12. The teenage girl told the court the attacks took place in Hayden’s home and his truck.
Hayden denied the allegations during the trial, however he was found guilty by a jury in less than an hour.
He is also still facing two other charges – one relating to the same 15-year-old girl who testified against him, as well as his daughter, Stephanie.
Stephanie Hayden told the Dr Phil Show in 2014 her father entered her bedroom one night in the mid-1990s and kissed her while trying to undress her. Stephanie said her father was drunk at the time.
She added she escaped her father’s grasps that night, and that he never touched her inappropriately again.
The accusations and Hayden’s arrest led to the cancellation of the television show, Sons of Guns.
Hayden was also removed as owner of his company, Red Jacket Firearms.

Victim 3,001? Australian journalist reveals meeting Pablo Escobar’s hitman behind 3,000 killings
An Australian journalist has told of the moment he came eye-to-eye with one of South America’s most prolific killers. Rusty Young interviewed Pablo Escobar’s hitman for his new documentary.
It was a nerve-racking experience – even for a man who voluntarily spent several months inside a Bolivian prison.
‘That was a really hairy interview,’ said Rusty Young, who met the former cartel hitman John ‘Popeye’ Velasquez during the making of his new documentary Wildlands.
Velasquez, a former enforcer for Pablo Escobar, has admitted to murdering hundreds, and is believed to have arranged for the killings of some 3,000 people.
‘I wanted to ask the tough questions [but] I didn’t to be [victim] 3001,’ Mr Young told News Corp.
