Las Vegas shooting: Melbourne family swept up in bloody stampede for safety
Melinda Simpson from Melbourne was leaving Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino with her husband, son and daughter when the shooting began.
She would later learn a shooter on the 32nd floor of the casino was firing down onto a packed crowd of thousands at the Route 91 outdoor country music festival below.
Hours later, it would be reported that more than 200 were injured and at least 50 dead.

‘Talking is not the answer!’: Trump at odds with Pentagon chief over North Korea
US President Donald Trump has dismissed the option of diplomatic negotiations with North Korea, declaring that “talking is not the answer” just a day after Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile over Japan, drawing international condemnation.

“The US has been talking to North Korea, and paying them extortion money, for 25 years. Talking is not the answer!”, Mr Trump tweeted, renewing his tough rhetoric toward Pyongyang.
Mr Trump’s latest comment appeared to undercut his own secretaries of defence and state, who have emphasised finding a diplomatic solution to North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, and Pentagon chief Jim Mattis was quick to respond that diplomacy was always on the table.

ARU rejects ‘generous’ offer from Andrew Forrest to save Western Force in Super Rugby
An offer believed to be worth $50 million from mining entrepreneur Andrew Forrest to keep the Western Force in the Super Rugby competition has been rejected by the Australian Rugby Union (ARU).
Mr Forrest met key ARU figures for three hours in Adelaide on Tuesday after the governing body announced its decision to axe the Force from Super Rugby earlier this month.
His charity, the Minderoo Foundation, issued a statement after the meeting saying the ARU had rejected “an unprecedented financial offer … to ensure the future of rugby as a national sport and to guarantee the future of the Western Force”.
“In addition to the substantial offer to national rugby, there was an unconditional guarantee … that there would be no financial risk to the ARU if it was to retain the Western Force in Super Rugby,” the statement said.
It is understood Mr Forrest’s offer was valued at $50 million.

ISIS schoolgirl turned bride could face trial
Linda Wenzel, 16, and the malnourished tot were found in the ruins of Mosul last week before being transferred to Baghdad, The Sunday Times reports.
An Iraqi Special Operations Forces soldier said: “I don’t know for sure that it is her baby, but she keeps him with her always.
“I don’t think she regretted joining ISIS because she looked angry and she refused any help that we provide.”
Linda could still face trial in Iraq after reportedly admitting to killing Iraqi soldiers after she was tracked down by troops hiding in a tunnel.

A jail inmate who was the focus of an investigation into the disappearances of four men admitted on Thursday that he killed them, his attorney said in a surprise development.
Cosmo DiNardo, 20, confessed to the commission of or participation in four murders and agreed to plead guilty to four murder counts, attorney Paul Lang said outside court, where DiNardo had met with investigators. DiNardo also told investigators where the bodies are.

Stockholm terror attack: Suspect arrested after four killed in truck attack, Sweden police say
Terrified shoppers ran for their lives as the stolen truck rammed pedestrians and crashed into a department store shortly after 2:00pm local time.
“I turned around and saw a big truck coming towards me. It swerved from side to side. It didn’t look out of control, it was trying to hit people,” said Glen Foran, an Australian tourist.
“It hit people, it was terrible. It hit a pram with a kid in it, demolished it.”
The identity of the detained man has not been disclosed and police are not confirming whether he is the suspected driver.

George Brandis: Labor push for contempt hearing
Federal Labor is trying to push contempt of court proceedings against Attorney-General George Brandis, arguing he is not taking an order relating to his ministerial diary seriously.
Key points:
- Shadow AG lodged FOI request to access Brandis’s diary
- Request blocked by AG’s office, arguing it would take too long to process
- Federal Court upheld AAT’s ruling, ordering Brandis to process the claim
Senator Brandis and his counterpart, Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, have been locked in a stalemate for almost three years.
Mr Dreyfus lodged a freedom of information (FOI) request to access an electronic copy of the Attorney-General’s diary, to see who he met with before sweeping cuts hit his portfolio in the 2014 federal budget.
That request was initially blocked by Senator Brandis’s office, who argued it would take too long to process because he would have to personally approve the release of every item.
