Two police officers critically wounded in San Antonio shooting

Police said the one of the officers pulled the other to safety.

A pair of San Antonio Police officers were shot and a suspect was killed during a gunfight that erupted near a community college just north of downtown Thursday afternoon.

The officers were transported to a hospital in “very critical” condition, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told reporters during a news conference shortly after the shooting.

The incident began when police pulled over a vehicle carrying two people and began to approach the car on foot, McManus said.

“As soon as they got out of the car the one person opened fire on both of them,” he said. “One officer was struck in the head area — in the face. The other officer was struck in the upper torso.”

“Officers returned fire and they struck the suspect,” he added.

One person was killed and the surviving person was “detained immediately.”

McManus said both officers, who are in their late 20s and early 30s, have worked for the department for nine years…
