Gay marriage: How do I check my electoral enrolment before postal plebiscite?
The high-profile gay icons added their voices to calls for Aussies to urgently update their enrolment details today ahead of next month’s postal plebiscite on gay marriage.
Their shout out on Twitter reached nearly 85 million people worldwide.
Degeneres, who wed Australian Portia De Rossi in the United States in 2008, said: “Australia, I love you. It’s time for marriage equality. Make sure you’re enrolled to vote right now.”
Fry urged Australians to enrol and vote ‘Yes’ in the upcoming plebiscite.

‘This wasn’t the plan’: Trump staff left reeling as President goes off the rails
In a rage-filled press conference Donald Trump has confirmed two bleak facts about his character and presidency. Firstly, that he does not signal to the so-called alt-right with his incendiary statements and his regurgitation of online conspiracy theories, he is in fact an alt-right president. Secondly, that he is utterly uncontrollable by the senior staff who rapidly cycle through his increasingly chaotic White House.
Trump appeared ostensibly to talk about plans to revitalise infrastructure, then offered to take questions.
This was, you might remember, the third time Trump addressed the deadly violence that accompanied a rally organised by and for white supremacists to protest against the removal of Confederate monuments on Saturday.
That day, before one of their number drove into a crowd of peaceful counter protesters, injuring 19 and killing a 32-year-old woman, Heather Heyer, the far right crowd was filmed beating people and chanting slogans such as “Jews will not replace us,” “Blood and soil,” and “heil Trump”…

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7, Episode 4 review: ‘The Spoils of War’
Can’t get enough “Game of Thrones”? Come on over to my Washington Post chat here Monday at 1 p.m.
“Game of Thrones” has become known for its extravagant, daring battle sequences. But even by the standard of “Hardhome” or “Battle of the Bastards,” “The Spoils of War” was an outstanding piece of television, the first episode of “Game of Thrones” in quite some time that has left me physically shaken and morally stirred. After three weeks of sometimes grindingly expository setup, “The Spoils of War” got things moving, making use of the series’ newfound penchant for quick travel to get the war between Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) truly underway. But the battle that accomplished this was also the culmination of a larger theme developed in earlier scenes: This is an episode about recognizing that someone or something is far more lethal than you think, and trying to adjust your worldview accordingly.
To start at the beginning, when the theme is presented with a bit of a twist, two of the Lannister siblings seem to be underrating the lethality of some of their compatriots…

Vince Colosimo’s fall from grace. Driving while under the influence of drugs with suspended licence
The Aussie actor has been a regular on TV screens since the mid-90s and almost cracked the big time in Hollywood thanks to roles in Body of Lies [2008] alongside Russell Crowe and The Great Gatsby [2013] with Leonardo DiCaprio.
But after a hellish few years, for which the actor only has himself to blame, Colosimo is now facing jail time after another run-in with the law.
It’s a sad tale of a falling star whose downward spiral began in 2007 when his partner off 11 years, Jane Hall, ended their relationship.
A messy and very public court battle followed as the two actor’s fought over a property worth $890,000 in Northcote where they lived together and raised their daughter, Lucia.
As the case dragged on, Colosimo landed the role of Alphonse Gangitano in Channel Nine’s Underbelly in 2009.
He was nominated for a Logie for his portrayal of the underworld figure nicknamed the “Black Prince of Lygon Street”, but has found the popularity of his character hard to shake in the years since.
“I played Alphonse for two weeks and that rides me every f**king day,” he told TV Tonight, “Every day, in a good way and a bad way”.

India launches new single nationwide tax
NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s Parliament held a special midnight session Friday to introduce a new single nationwide tax, replacing a complicated mix of state and federal taxes that will change the cost of nearly everything people buy.
India’s president and the prime minister pressed a button heralding the major overhaul of the taxation system — known as the single Goods and Services Tax — from July 1.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a speech that the new system would eliminate 500 types of taxes in favor of one tax across the country, a catalyst that would remove trade imbalance and promote exports.
“GST is a simple, transparent system which prevents generation of blackmoney and curbs corruption. The system gives opportunity to honesty and people who do honest business,” he said.

Perth councils split on plastic bags, East Fremantle votes to ban
The council this week voted to introduce the ban, which, if approved by the McGowan Government, comes into force in six months time.
Fremantle, Cockburn, Joondalup and Stirling are among the other councils dotted across Perth considering local laws banning single-use plastic bags.
The situation is a result of the McGowan Government’s pre-election policy that individual councils introduce their own local bans.
It means, for example, that by the end of the year supermarkets in Melville can hand out bags out for free but supermarkets in neighbouring East Fremantle and Fremantle will not….

Huge damage bill after $5m fire at Perth warehouse
Authorities were called to the structure fire at a warehouse on Pilbara Street in Welshpool about 10.30pm on Tuesday.
It believed about 60 firefighters were at the scene, which took three hours to extinguish.
There were no people in the building at the time of the fire. The blaze is being treated as suspicious.
Arson Squad detectives will attend the scene on Wednesday, and police urge anyone with information to come forward, with rewards of up to $50,000 available for information that leads to the identification and conviction of an arsonist.

Liberal suspended Ross Cameron cites Gandhi & says Holocaust wouldn’t have happened if free speech wasn’t suppressed
Former federal MP Ross Cameron has quoted Gandhi and even mentioned the Holocaust as he remains unrepentant after being suspended by the NSW Liberals.
