Strains grow in Republicans’ unhappy marriage with Trump

It may not yet be a full-blown divorce, but the relationship between Donald Trump and the Republican Party is fast unravelling, threatening the president’s prospects of steering legislation through Congress.

Trump took barely 18 months to conquer the party of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan, swatting aside more traditional challengers as he seized the Republican White House nomination in last year’s US election.

But six months into his presidency, his disconnect with many in his party is clear, after the departure of two party stalwarts from the White House and the public shaming of his own attorney general.

And after a recent humiliating defeat in the Senate on health reforms, party insiders are warning Trump can expect similar setbacks unless he learns to work constructively with Republicans on Capitol Hill.

“His presidency will only be successful if he has allies throughout the government, and that includes the legislative branch,” said Alex Conant, a former senior aide to Senator Marco Rubio.

“If he spends his entire presidency at war with Congress, it will be a very unfulfilling four years,” added Conant, who classed the current relationship between party and president as “awkward.”

Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide forecasts: Record breaking cold weather -5.6c

WAS it difficult getting out from under the doona this weekend? Did you shiver on the way to work this morning? Well spare a thought for the people of Deniliquin.

The mercury in the NSW town, close to the Murray River, sank to -5.6C early on Sunday morning — that’s the coldest it’s been for 110 years.

It was even more icy further north as winter records were broken across NSW and Victoria — some towns recorded their coldest morning ever.

It’s so freezing, the NSW Fire and Rescue Service has been forced to warn people not to fire up barbecues indoors.

But, on the bright side, snow starved ski resorts can look forward to the first dumps for a while.

“Yes, it’s still cold. The average minimum in Canberra is 0C in July so -7C is well below average,” Sky News Weather meteorologist Tom Saunders told news.com.au on Monday.

There should be a slight respite this week with temperatures heading back towards the winter average…

Elle Macpherson and husband Jeff Soffer split

ELLE Macpherson and her billionaire husband, Jeff Soffer, have split, sources in Miami exclusively tell Page Six.

“Elle and Jeff are definitely over,” a source said of the couple, who were married in 2013, after a notoriously on-again, off-again romance.

“She has left their house at Indian Creek in Miami with her kids, and is looking for her own house in Miami. He has been linked to some other women, but insists they are just friends.”

Macpherson has two teenage sons, Flynn and Aurelius Cy, from her relationship with hedge funder Arpad Busson.

She was also previously married to fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon.

The Australian supermodel — nicknamed “The Body” — and Soffer dated for two years and split for eight months before getting engaged in 2012. At the time, Page Six reported that Soffer — whose father, Donald, is also a real estate mogul — had a change of heart about the relationship after he cheated death in a chopper crash in which his best friend, Lance Valdez, died…

Tom Cruise’s security team blocks Sydney’s Cross City tunnel to avoid paparazzi

Tom Cruise has made his much anticipated arrival in Australia ahead of the premiere of his new movie The Mummy.

The 54-year-old Hollywood star touched down in a private jet on Monday morning.

Following his arrival, the actor’s security team blocked a major Sydney tunnel in an effort to avoid paparazzi.

The Cross City Tunnel, a 2.1 km tunnel tollway, was momentarily blocked by cars so no one could pass or follow the actor and his team from the airport.

Looking excited to be Down Under, the effervescent star was beaming as he disembarked his flight earlier in the morning.

Tom cut a smart figure in a crisp white shirt, tailored suit jacket and coordinating trousers, dress shoes and stylish sunglasses.

Brexit: Gibraltar’s Future Uncertain As EU Position Gives Spain Veto

Brexit Makes Gibraltar’s Future Uncertain

Known as “the rock”, Gibraltar is home to 30,000 people. Though it is off southern Spain, it has been British for more than 300 years, and arguments over its status have caused tensions between the two countries.

The residents, who are British citizens, voted 96% Remain in the June referendum.

Spain has long pressed a territorial claim to Gibraltar, seeking at least joint sovereignty with Britain over it
