Derryn Hinch faces Section 44 uncertainty over US social security card
The Victorian senator has confirmed that he still holds a US social security card from his time living in New York in the 1960s and 1970s, which could be a breach of the constitution.
Section 44 of the constitution not only bans anyone with allegiance to a foreign power from sitting in parliament, it also disqualifies anyone who is “entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power”.
Senator Hinch said he would seek legal advice, and acknowledged he could join the ranks of seven other parliamentarians already facing the High Court over their eligibility.
“I plan to raise the issue with the solicitor-general and, if necessary, will refer myself to the High Court, acting as the Court of Disputed Returns,” he said in a statement.

But the crossbencher said he did not believe he was in breach of the constitution.
“I have never held US citizenship. I have never held a Green Card,” Senator Hinch said.
“I do have a social security number because I worked for the Sydney Morning Herald in New York and automatically acquired one. It stays with you, citizen or not, until you die.

Brussels terror attack: Man dead after injuring soldiers with knife
Belgian soldiers have shot dead a man in the centre of Brussels after he came at them with a knife shouting Allahu Akbar (God is great), in a case authorities are treating as a terrorist attack.
The man, a 30-year-old Belgian of Somali origin, died after being rushed to hospital.
The soldiers were not seriously hurt in the attack; one had a facial wound and the other’s hand was wounded.
Prosecutors said the man, who was not known for terrorist activities, had twice shouted Allahu Akbar during the attack, which occurred at about 8:15pm on Friday night (local time) just outside the city’s central pedestrian zone while the soldiers were on patrol.
Spokeswoman Esther Natus of the federal prosecutor’s office declined to identify the man or confirm whether he was known to police, saying only that “the suspect is dead”.
“We do consider it a terror attack,” Ms Natus said.

Woman’s body moved to side of road after car crash in Chester Hill, Sydney
A woman has been found dead on a footpath in Sydney’s west after the car she was in crashed early on Saturday morning.
Police said the woman, believed to be in her mid 30s, was found after the car she was in lost control, hitting a concrete traffic island and a power pole on Waldron Road in Chester Hill.
Officers said they believed she was sitting in the back left-hand seat that took most of the impact.
Three other people who were in the car took her body to the side of the road after the crash before running away.
The woman has not been identified.
Detective Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks said police believe speed was a factor in the crash.
“For these three young males to be involved in this crash, to pull this young woman out of the car and then leave her to die by the side of the road is certainly a very significant factor in this very sad and tragic event,” he said.
“It’s a clear lack of personal responsibility which is costing lives on NSW roads.“

St Petersburg: Subway blast was suicide attack, Russian investigators say
A Kyrgyz-born suicide bomber was behind a blast on the St Petersburg subway that killed 14 people, Russian investigators say.

- Suspect’s DNA found on a bag containing a bomb at another St Petersburg station
- Death toll rises to 14 people
- No group has claimed responsibility for the attack
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Monday afternoon (local time) attack, which came while President Vladimir Putin was visiting the city, Russia’s second biggest and Mr Putin’s hometown.
Russia’s Health Minister on Tuesday raised the death toll from 11 to 14 and said 49 people are still hospitalised.
City Hall authorities said there were several foreign nationals among those killed and injured but would not give details.

Sara Connor, ‘stressed’ and ‘confused’ after jail sentence in Bali, faces key decision
The Byron Bay woman, sentenced to four years’ jail by a Bali court on Monday, has a week to decide whether she will appeal in Bali’s High Court or accept the ruling from the panel of three judges.
If the 46-year-old does appeal to have the conviction overturned, she runs the risk of having the sentence increased.
She has already served seven months of the sentence and Indonesia’s justice system is well known for granting remissions on major religious and national holidays.
The Australian and her British boyfriend, David Taylor, were found guilty of group assault causing death in the Denpasar District Court.
Taylor, 34, was sentenced to six years behind bars. He will not appeal.

Fourth man dead after Illinois storms
Peoria County’s coroner says 31-year-old David A. Johnson of Ottawa died Wednesday of severe head trauma in hospital.
Johnson was in a backyard with his spouse and father-in-law Tuesday when the storm uprooted a tree that landed on them. His 76-year-old father-in-law, Wayne Tuntland, was killed. His spouse was treated at a hospital.
Seventy-one-year-old Thomas McCord also died Tuesday when an apparent tornado struck a building in southern Illinois.
In Missouri, officials say 24-year-old Travis Koenig of Perryville was killed when a tornado blew his vehicle off a highway. Forecasters say the tornado, which damaged more than 100 homes, had wind speeds between 225 and 265 km/h.
