Richard Branson offers Makepeace Island as refuge for Noosa North Shore fire victims
In the middle of watching his Noosa North Shore home burn to the ground at the weekend, Mike Hancock received a hugely generous offer from an English knight.
Mr Hancock was one of 10 residents who lost their home in the devastating blaze, and has been invited to stay on Sir Richard Branson’s Makepeace Island off Noosa.
Three homes were destroyed in the blaze on Saturday afternoon and two were structurally damaged, in a bad few days for fires in the region.
Speaking from the luxury, private heart-shaped island, Mr Hancock told the ABC the offer and generosity was overwhelming.
“In the middle of the fire [Makepeace manager] Jason Styles came over and said we could come stay at the island,” he said.
The offer came via Mr Styles from Virgin Australia co-founder Brett Godfrey, who owns Makepeace Island with Sir Richard.

England wins Women’s World Cup in thrilling finish over India at packed-out Lord’s
England has won its fourth Women’s World Cup, with Anya Shrubsole taking six wickets to clinch a nine-run victory over India amid delirious scenes at a packed Lord’s.
The home side looked in danger of defeat as India beared down on its total of 7-228, but an astonishing spell of seam bowling by England’s vice-captain turned the game on its head in the most nail-biting of finishes.
India was coasting on 3-191 when Shrubsole took the key wicket of Poonam Raut, lbw for 86, and the inexperienced middle order collapsed to 219 all out in the 49th over.
Apart from her wickets, Shrubsole also played a key role in the run out of Shikha Pandey, collecting sharply in the covers and throwing back to wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor, when India was still in the game needing 14 off the last three overs.
As a youngster, Shrubsole once watched her father Ian play club cricket at Lord’s and she said to play a starring role in England’s victory was a dream come true.
“It was an amazing game from start to finish,” she said.

Cardinal George Pell arrives in Sydney ahead of court appearance on sex abuse charges
Pell was spotted during a stopover in Singapore on the weekend and arrived in Sydney this morning.
He was met by security and whisked away to a waiting car at the airport’s loading dock.
He is due to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 26.
Pell has always maintained his innocence and strenuously denied allegations of historical sexual abuse, the details of which have not been made public.
Late last month, Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton told reporters the charges involved multiple complainants.
Deputy Commissioner Patton said the “process and procedures” being followed had been the same as those applied “in a whole range of historical sex offences, whenever we investigate them”.
Pell: from publican’s son to priest
Pell was the son of a Ballarat publican, a head prefect at school and a talented Australian Rules footballer, who was signed as a ruckman by the Richmond Football Club.
His studies took him to Rome and then Oxford.
In 1971 he returned to Victoria as an ordained priest, and rose through the ranks to eventually become Archbishop of Melbourne.

Arkansas club shooting: 28 injured in Little Rock nightclub after ‘dispute’
Police said they believed the gunfire erupted amid a dispute among clubgoers, and that multiple people fired shots but there were no suggestions the incident was terrorism-related.
The shooting occurred in the Power Ultra Lounge in Little Rock in the early hours of the morning on Saturday (local time) during a rap concert.
Little Rock police said 25 people were shot and three others suffered unrelated injuries but all were expected to survive.
“Some sort of dispute broke out between individuals that were inside, and an exchange of gunfire took place,” Police Chief Kenton Buckner said.
“We do not believe this was an act of terror, nor do we believe it was an active shooter situation.

US officials fingerprint refugees on Manus Island as part of US-Australia resettlement deal
Officials from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are now on Manus Island fingerprinting and photographing refugees as part of the US-Australia refugee deal.
The officials are expected to spend three days on the island and plan to return to conduct further interviews at the end of this month.
Refugees who have expressed interest in moving to the United States have been provided with documents outlining the support that will be provided should they be accepted.
