Kim Wall: Headless torso amputated ‘deliberately’ could be submarine journalist: Danish police

Danish police say the size of a headless female torso found on the sea’s edge in Copenhagen suggests it could be that of a Swedish journalist who died after taking a submarine ride with the vessel’s Danish inventor.

Police said divers were still searching the area and they were investigating reports of other body parts that may have been spotted in Copenhagen harbour.

Danish inventor Peter Madsen has been charged with killing Kim Wall, a Swedish journalist, in his home-made submarine.

“We’re dealing with a torso where arms, legs and head were cut off deliberately,” Copenhagen police spokesman Jens Moller said in a video statement.

“The length of the torso doesn’t speak against it being Kim Wall, but we still don’t know.”

Mr Madsen told a court she had died in an accident on board the submarine and that he had buried her at sea, changing his earlier statement that he dropped her off alive in Copenhagen.

Police are conducting DNA tests to identify the torso — found on Monday by a passing cyclist — and the results are due Wednesday morning (local time), Mr Moller said.

US hits refugee intake cap as Manus Island, Nauru refugees assessed

Refugees in detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru could be delayed entry to the United States after the country hit its annual refugee intake cap yesterday.

The US is assessing many of the hundreds of refugees in those centres for resettlement as part of a deal struck last year with the Australian Government.

US President Donald Trump reduced America’s annual refugee intake from 110,000 to 50,000 as part of his travel ban earlier this year.

The US State Department has said that cap was reached yesterday.

The new intake year begins on October 1.

The fate of Manus refugees

The Australian Government is unlikely to do anything about the refugees on Manus Island who won’t be resettled in the US.

Exemptions could be made for those who have a “credible claim to a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States”, following a decision from the US Supreme Court last month that revived elements of Mr Trump’s travel ban while it considers the legality of the order.

Andy Murray beats Verdasco to win Dubai tournament

Andy Murray will swap one desert for another in the next 48 hours, buoyed by his first ATP title of the season after the disappointment of the Australian Open.

The world No 1 will take the 16 hour flight to Los Angeles, having extended his lead at the top of the rankings with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Fernando Verdasco to win the Dubai Duty Free Championships.

Joko Widodo expected to talk trade, trust, tourism and foreign tensions on Australia trip

Indonesian President Joko Widodo makes his first bilateral visit to Australia this weekend — a sign relations between the two nations are stable.

Key points:

• There will be a more casual rather than formal affair between the two leaders, Indonesian Foreign Ministry says
• Negotiations over free trade deal will dominate talks
• Two leaders will also discuss the risk of foreign fighters returning from Iraq, Syria

Mr Widodo arrived in Sydney this morning and trade and security talks will dominate his two-day visit.

Mr Widodo, who is commonly referred to as “Jokowi”, was due to address a joint sitting of the federal Parliament in Canberra last year, but postponed the visit after a violent protest in Jakarta led by conservative Islamic groups.

“This visit is very important for us, this is a visit to a close neighbour,” Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said ahead of Mr Widodo’s arrival in Sydney.
