Mike Willesee, giant of current affairs, lays bare his life or death cancer battle

Mike Willesee isn’t a well man. At the age of 75, he is battling stage four cancer of the throat, and it’s painful to watch, as he slowly walks into Sydney’s Chris O’Brien Lifehouse treatment centre.

Minutes later, a therapist places a mask over his face in preparation for one of his daily doses of radiation therapy.

Would he like the music playing through his treatment?

“Yeah, leave the music on,” he replies, as incongruously, the sound of Frank Sinatra fills the room: “Come fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away… if you can use some exotic booze, there’s a bar in far Bombay…
