5 Suicide bombers launch co-ordinated attack in Afghanistan, killing and wounding dozens

Dozens of people were killed or wounded when as many as five suicide bombers attacked a police headquarters in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, officials say.

Key points:

  • Car bomb explodes, then multiple suicide bombers attack
  • Doctors say at least five police killed and 30 people wounded
  • Taliban claims responsibility for attack

The attack began about 6:30am when one bomber detonated a car packed with explosives at the gate of the police headquarters in Gardez city, capital of Paktia province, said Najib Danish, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry.

Four more attackers stormed the gate after the blast, with at least two quickly killed by police.

The others held out against Afghan special forces that had responded to the attack, he said.

Mr Danish put the toll at two police killed and five wounded.

However, doctors at the city hospital said they had received the bodies of at least five police, as well as at least 30 wounded people, including 20 civilians.

Why you’re about to pay through the nose for power THANKS to Tony Abbott

Business leaders pleaded for partisan support for the Finkel report’s findings, but with partisan breakdown over energy policy erupting yet again, power prices only have one way to go — up.

Just on three years ago, a jubilant Tony Abbott — having just secured agreement to vanquish the carbon tax, the handbrake on the Australian economy — appeared on national television.

Australian households would be $550 a year better off with the removal of the “toxic” carbon tax, he declared. Gas prices would fall 7 per cent.

Electricity prices would drop 9 per cent. Everyone would be a winner, he told 7.30’s Leigh Sales.

“Because the price of power is a component of just about every price in the economy. When the price of power falls, other prices should go down as well,” he said.

Yep, it should. Except when it doesn’t.

Ever since the carbon tax was removed, power prices have only headed one way; upwards. This, at a time when oil prices have halved and coal slumped.

And then last week, Australians were greeted with alarming headlines like this in The Australian: POWER PRICE HIKE SHOCK SPREADS.

Porsche leaves it late to win 24 Hours Le Mans for 3rd year

LE MANS, France (AP) — Veteran German driver Timo Bernhard led Porsche to a dramatic third straight win at the 24 Hours Le Mans race to prevent a huge upset win for the lesser category Oreca team on Sunday.

After a series of mishaps to pre-race favorites Porsche and Toyota, the LMP2 category Oreca suddenly found itself in the lead with 19-year-old Frenchman Thomas Laurent behind the wheel three hours from the end of the grueling endurance race.

But the 36-year-old Bernhard, racing in the faster and more powerful LMP1 category Porsche 919 Hybrid, overtook the Oreca with about 1 hour remaining.

As the Porsche No. 2 crossed the finish line, there were scenes of relief in the Porsche garage as team members danced around holding up t-shirts with ”Hat trick 2015, 2016, 2017” written on them.

Teammate Brendon Hartley, who had done much of the hard work to drag Porsche back into the race, was in tears.

Bernhard finished about one minute ahead of the Jackie Chan DC Racing team car, owned by the famed action movie star.

Bernhard also won the race in 2010 when driving for the dominant Audi team.

It was a fantastic comeback win considering that the Porsche No. 2 was held up for more than one hour due to technical problems earlier in the race.
