Atlantic rescue after UK racing yachts are sunk and damaged by hurricane force winds

A British yacht was sunk and others severely damaged after they encountered hurricane force winds on a transatlantic race to Rhode Island, USA.  A major rescue operation was launched in “extreme” weather by the Canadian Navy late on Friday night.

The boats, which sailed from Plymouth, were taking part in the club’s Original Singlehanded Transatlantic Race and the Twohanded Transatlantic Race. The 22 boats are crewed by solo or by two people.

But 1,700 miles east of Newfoundland they encountered 80mph winds and 15 metre high waves, CTV News reported.

The Furia was sunk and its crew were taken in by survey vessel Thor Magna, the club said.

Happy was dismasted and its crew were rescued by tug vessel Apl Forward, it added.

The Tamarind also suffered severe damage and its crew was rescued by cruise ship Queen Mary II.

UK General election: Theresa May is a dead woman walking, says George Osborne

Prime Minister Theresa May is “a dead woman walking” who will inevitably face a leadership challenge, former Tory Chancellor George Osborne has said.

Mr Osborne, who is now editor of the Evening Standard, said that Tory MPs were “absolutely furious” that Mrs May had not acknowledged their losses.

He told the Andrew Marr Show: “It’s just how long she is going to remain on death row.”

He said her leadership could come to an end “at the end of next week”.

Trump takes credit for Middle East action against Qatar – but it’s actually fake news

Donald Trump claimed credit for Saudi Arabia’s move to isolate Qatar only for it to emerge Russian hackers planted a fake news story that sparked the decision.

Before it was revealed Moscow had breached Qatar’s state news agency the US President said he was responsible for several Middle East countries breaking off diplomatic and commercial ties.

On Monday, Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen all distanced themselves with Qatar, citing its support for terrorist groups.

On Tuesday President Trump tweeted: “During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology.”

Young sisters die in Tas shed fire

The bodies of two young sisters have been found following a fire in a shed in Tasmania’s north.

Police and the Tasmania Fire Service were called to a property on Austins Road, Turners Marsh, about 3am on Sunday following reports that a shed was on fire.

The bodies of the two girls, aged 10 and 13, were found in the shed after the fire was brought under control.

It was being used as a bedroom and police say it had no smoke alarm inside.

“The family are extremely distraught … the father of the two little girls had initially called in the fire to emergency services,” Inspector John King told reporters on Sunday.

“Not only have the two little girls unfortunately perished in this fire, the three other children were in the main house.”

Jeremy Corbyn; if history is indeed repeating itself, he will be the Prime Minister

 

It may be no accident that John McDonnell – one of the principal architects of Labour’s remarkable resurgence – and Jeremy Corbyn sound like they’ve been following the 1974 example, the last time Britain had a hung parliament and the formation of a minority government. They’re of an age to remember it well. McDonnell often speaks of it. They’ve been doing their history homework.

You can see the attractions of this story from long ago, and some uncanny parallels. The then Tory prime minister, Ted Heath, had a reputation of buckling under pressure, chaotic decision-making and a taste for U-turns, an interesting echo from history. Faced with a miners’ strike, he decided to strengthen his mandate – he already had a working majority of 40 plus and another 18 months for his government to run – so called an early snap election. He asked the question “Who Governs Britain?” so he could take on the unions; just like May wanted one to take on the EU. Both found that the British public decided the general election wasn’t going to be about that but rather about the economy, public services and the usual issues. Labour won on a pretty left-wing manifesto.
