Hurricane Harvey: Trump accused of shunning victims of deadly disaster
Trump arrived Tuesday in the southern state after the catastrophic natural disaster claimed at least 12 lives and forced tens and thousands of people to flee deluged homes.
The president was greeted with cheers and jeers from 1000 supporters and protesters who had gathered on a rural highway near Corpus Christi. Many were chanting, “USA! USA! USA!”. and, “We love Trump”.
“Thank you, everybody,” he said as he addressed the crowd.
“I just want to say: We love you. You are special … What a crowd. What a turnout.”
Trump praised his Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator, Brock Long, for becoming “famous” during his frequent TV appearances, spoke about the historic nature of the storm and marvelled at adoring Texas supporters who greeted him.
As of late Tuesday local time, Mr Trump had yet to mention those killed, visit those affected or call on other Americans to help or directly encourage donations to relief organisations.
That, combined with the white “USA” hat he wore (which is advertised for $40 on his site shop.donaldtrump.com) during the address prompted backlash from those who accused him of gratuitous marketing.
It was the third time in four days that Mr Trump wore on-sale campaign merchandise to Harvey-related events.
Watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) spokesman Jordan Libowitz told CNN the president’s decision to wear the hat in official White House photos “even removed from the hurricane, (is) pretty inappropriate”.
According to CREW, the main issue was that it subsequently meant “free advertising for Trump products”. But he said there was no suggestion the president had done anything illegal by wearing the hat.
“There is a difference between what is technically legal and what is ethically right,” he said.

Ford and Domino’s to deliver pizza using self-driving cars in new test
Ford and Domino’s are teaming up on a research trial that will see Ford cars equipped with self-driving tech delivering pizzas to regular consumers, as a way of figuring out how everyday people will react to, and interact with, autonomous service vehicles in the future.
Ford Fusion Hybrid Autonomous Cars will be used in the test, outfitted with pizza containers created by Domino’s partner Roush Enterprises designed to keep the pizzas warm en route, and to unlock when a customer types in their unique delivery code. The vehicles will be available to randomly selected Domino’s customers who order pizza in the Ann Arbor area, with the ability on the customer end to opt in to receiving a delivery via AV when they’re selected.
Both Ford and Domino’s will be using the test to see how people react to receiving pizzas via self-driving vehicles. Ford considers the customer and user experience aspects of autonomous driving technology a core part of the overall platform it’s developing, Ford Autonomous and Electric Vehicles VP Sherif Marakby tells me, and it’s using this real-world trial to test its assumptions and help it develop that aspect of the product it hopes to commercialize in just a few years’ time.

Tesla’s Model X is the safest SUV ever tested – Jun. 13, 2017
Hundreds of other SUV models have been given five stars overall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But in each case, the SUV received only four stars on one of the component ratings, typically rollover risk. SUVs have a higher center of gravity and are more prone to roll over than a typical family sedan.
But the electric-powered Model X has a heavy lithium battery pack on the bottom of the car that provides the power, and thus has a much lower center of gravity than the typical SUV. So it was the first in its class to get five stars across the board.
Besides assessing the risk of a rollover, NHTSA, the federal safety regulator, tests how safe a car is in a head-on collision, in a side collision and skidding into a pole or a tree on its side.

Young sisters die in Tas shed fire
Police and the Tasmania Fire Service were called to a property on Austins Road, Turners Marsh, about 3am on Sunday following reports that a shed was on fire.
The bodies of the two girls, aged 10 and 13, were found in the shed after the fire was brought under control.
It was being used as a bedroom and police say it had no smoke alarm inside.
“The family are extremely distraught … the father of the two little girls had initially called in the fire to emergency services,” Inspector John King told reporters on Sunday.
“Not only have the two little girls unfortunately perished in this fire, the three other children were in the main house.”
