SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) — Fernando Alonso must already be counting down the days until the Indianapolis 500, given how frustrating Formula One has become for the Spaniard.
The two-time F1 champion is making his IndyCar debut on May 28, and it probably can’t come soon enough.
Alonso’s engine failed early into qualifying on Saturday for the Bahrain Grand Prix, pushing him to 15th place on the grid for Sunday’s race.
Neither Alonso nor his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne won a point in the first two races of the season. With the Belgian driver two places behind Alonso on the grid, that is unlikely to change here.
“It will be a long, hot and difficult one for both our drivers,” McLaren’s race director Eric Boullier said. “But that’s the hand they’ve currently been dealt, and they’ll play it as best they can.”
McLaren struggled all of last season after switching back to Honda engines, finishing sixth in the constructors’ championship and with no podium finishes for the once-dominant team.
Alonso had looked reasonably secure in the first part of qualifying, and was about to start the second part on Saturday — known as Q2 — when he climbed out of his car and called it quits.

As the high-profile face of Canadian fashion store Reitmans, Meghan Markle has given her name to a range of sexy, skin-tight clothing she has modelled in a variety of sultry poses.
But now Ms Markle has abruptly quit her lucrative role as Reitmans brand ambassador, prompting more fevered speculation that she is realigning her public life in preparation for an engagement to Prince Harry.
Her decision even appears to have caught Reitmans on the hop. Sources say she was offered a large sum in December to renew her contract but surprised Reitmans by refusing to sign it.
The store continued to promote her involvement with the company but last month her team asked them to stop associating the brand with her.

The Australian Federal Police has been given the green light to pursue nine Russians over $30 million alleged to be the proceeds of crime.
The Supreme Court in Queensland last month granted the AFP the right to apply for orders to further investigate the group over money frozen in bank accounts back in December 2013.
The Russians are alleged to have deposited the mystery millions into Surfers Paradise, Queensland bank accounts between April 6, 2011 and August 23, 2013, The Courier-Mail reported.
But the Russians are also fighting to get the money back, arguing the AFP has already had ample time to investigate them.
The AFP believes the Russian’s modest incomes do not stack up with the millions frozen across 24 bank accounts.
One of the group has a reported annual salary of $24,000 but the money frozen in his bank account tops out at $11.8 million.
The nine Russians are said to have claimed interests in business in Siberia.
The AFP’s was meant to investigate the group via a video link between Brisbane and Irkutsk, southern Siberia in late 2015 but the Russian Government did not provide formal approval.
