Merck CEO resigns from Trump council after Charlottesville. Trump lashed out for quitting
(Reuters) – Merck & Co Inc Chief Executive Kenneth Frazier resigned from U.S. President Donald Trump’s American Manufacturing Council on Monday, saying he was taking a stand against intolerance and extremism.
A gathering of hundreds of white nationalists in Virginia took a deadly turn on Saturday when a car plowed into a group of counter-protesters and killed at least one person.
Trump had said “many sides” were involved, drawing fire from across the political spectrum for not specifically denouncing the far right.
“America’s leaders must honor our fundamental views by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy, which run counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal,” Frazier, who is African-American, said in a statement announcing his resignation. (bit.ly/2fFnITM)

Terror probe after man with knife ‘targets soldier’ at Eiffel Tower
A judicial official said a man holding a knife shouted “Allahu akbar” – the Arabic phrase for “God is great” – and tried to access a secure zone.
The suspect told police he wanted to attack a solider and had been in contact with an Islamic State jihadist, AFP reported.
He quickly surrendered when he was surrounded by security forces. The tower was briefly evacuated during Saturday night’s incident but there were no injuries.
The knifeman was wearing a Paris Saint-Germain shirt and at the time of the alert the tower was lit up with the team’s colours.
A security source told Reuters the suspect had been in a psychiatric hospital for several months and was granted temporary permission to leave care from 4-6 August.
Eiffel Tower reopened to tourists as usual on Sunday morning.
Paris remains on alert following a series of attacks since 2015.

#F1 #BritishGP REPORT: Hamilton cruises to victory to cut Sebastian Vettel’s lead to one point
Lewis Hamilton has cut Sebastian Vettel’s title lead to just one point at the halfway stage of the F1 season with a dominant, record-equalling fifth British GP victory.
Vettel finished only seventh after an incredible end at Silverstone saw both Ferraris pick up punctures and make emergency pit stops.
Kimi Raikkonen had been on course for second and Vettel fourth, but their unexpected late stops promoted Valtteri Bottas from third to second and gifted Mercedes an unexpected one-two.
Having started the race 20 points back on Vettel, Hamilton’s now-one point deficit is the closest the rivals have been in the standings since the second round of the season. Bottas’s second place means he closes to within 23 points of the summit with 10 races to go.
Raikkonen salvaged third, just his third podium of the year, but Vettel lost three places and as a result his season-long championship lead over Hamilton has been all-but wiped out.
Despite also pitting with two laps to go with a puncture, Max Verstappen took fourth for his first finish since May, while Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo thrilled the Silverstone crowd with a drive from the back row to fifth.
Hamilton’s British GP week had begun with heavy criticism from the media about his absence from F1’s London street demonstration, but the triple world champion appeared the quickest driver around his home circuit all weekend.
After recording the most dominant pole of the season so far on Saturday, Hamilton was never headed at the front on Sunday to equal the great Jim Clark’s 40-year-old record of five British GP victories. Alain Prost also equalled the record in 1993.
Hamilton also ties Clark as the only drivers to win the British GP four years in succession.

President Donald Trump has called off state visits to the UK until the British people are prepared to meet him with open arms.
The commander-in-chief told UK prime minister Theresa May in a phone call that he didn’t want to visit the UK if there were going to be large-scale protests against him – likely meaning his visit will be indefinitely postponed.
The call was made at some point in recent weeks, shocking the British leader an insider close to her told The Guardian.
The source said they were present in 10 Downing Street – the prime minister’s official office – when the call came through.

#F1 Vettel: Ferrari front row lockout for Russian Grand Prix as Hamilton struggles to fourth
Hamilton, mysteriously off-colour for much of the weekend here, was more than half a second behind Vettel, who celebrated his pole in raucous fashion over the team radio.
The last time Vettel started from pole was at the Singapore Grand Prix back in 2015, but his and Ferrari’s pace in Russia so far this weekend would appear to point towards a changing of the guard, with Hamilton’s Mercedes team having dominated the sport for the past three seasons.
Indeed Mercedes have a great record in these parts having won all of the three grands prix staged here while leading every lap.
But they, and in particular Hamilton, have struggled for form, with Ferrari now only cementing their status as real challengers for both the drivers’ and constructors’ crown.
Hamilton was nearly six tenths of a second behind Vettel, and almost half-a-second down on Bottas. His sluggish pace was greeted by crossed arms from Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda in the Mercedes garage, with the latter puffing out his cheeks and shaking his head.
For Vettel he was jubilant to seal his 47th career pole.
‘It is a very good result and I am sure everyone is happy and very proud,’ he said. ‘The car was phenomenal this afternoon and it was a real pleasure to take the car around on low fuel and drive it to the limit.’
British driver Jolyon Palmer is in desperate need of a strong weekend after a troubled start to the new season, but he had another day to forget here.
Palmer’s Renault mechanics worked through the night to replace his chassis after an exhaust issue was detected in practice on Friday. He then completed just four laps this morning following an engine failure, before he crashed out of qualifying to complete a torrid 24 hours.

New Zealand expels US diplomat as police probe stymied
Details of the alleged crime have not been revealed but local media reported the diplomat left the South Pacific nation last week suffering a broken nose and black eye.
Prime Minister Bill English labelled the US knockback on immunity regrettable and said he expected American authorities to carry out their own investigation.
“We expect all diplomats here to obey our law and if it’s broken, we’d expect our police to investigate,” Mr English said.
“We regret that they didn’t give us a waiver on immunity but they didn’t, and now it’s in the hands of their authorities.”
Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said he was “disappointed” at the US refusal and in response had asked for the man at the centre of the police investigation to be withdrawn from New Zealand.
He said Wellington’s ambassador in Washington had raised the issue with US officials.

Two people are injured after a huge fire breaks out, gutting a Ramada Inn in New Jersey
A woman and a police officer were injured when a massive fire broke out in a hotel in Vineland, New Jersey last night.
The Ramada Inn in Vineland, near Atlantic City, went up in flames around 2am but most of the guests escaped without being hurt.
A police officer who had been checking on guests was hospitalized and a woman suffered smoke inhalation and burn injuries but neither are in a life-threatening condition.
