Tennis: Kvitova faces Venus in mouth-watering U.S. Open match-up
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will battle seven-time grand slam title holder Venus Williams in a mouth-watering quarter-final to kick off the night session on center court at the U.S. Open on Tuesday.
Czech Kvitova, seeded 13, is coming off an impressive fourth-round straight-sets win over Spain’s world number three Garbine Muguruza, who many had picked to win the tournament.
Ninth seed Williams, who beat Carla Suarez Navarro to reach the last eight, got to the final at this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon and is gunning for her first grand slam title since 2008.
Kvitova, who is 10 years younger than 37-year-old Williams, has the edge in head-to-head meetings, having won four of their five previous meetings.
But the vocal New York crowd will likely throw its support behind the American, who won the tournament in 2000 and 2001.

Stephen Bannon is ripping mad, Breitbart unleashes fury at Trump: Afghanistan speech
It’s officially on. Breitbart News, with former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon back in charge, is ripping mad at US President Donald Trump after Monday’s Afghanistan speech foreshadowed an increase in ground troops.
The homepage of the website that cheered Trump to victory had five incredibly critical headlines. The accompanying articles might be even tougher. Here are key excerpts from the stories:
Article 1: “The speech was a disappointment to many who had supported his calls during the campaign to end expensive foreign intervention and nation-building.”
Article 2: “Using many of the same vague promises that previous presidents had used, including a repeat of [former US president Barack] Obama’s promise not to give a ‘blank check’ to Afghanistan and a pledge to finally get tough on Pakistan, it was a far cry from the ‘America First’ foreign policy he laid out in the months before Election Day.”
Article 3: “This isn’t about changing his perspective on the war. POTUS is a remarkably astute and stubborn individual. This was about the swamp getting to him.”
Article 4: “I voted for Donald Trump because he promised change. I may have made a mistake.”
Article 5: “In Donald Trump’s old gambling houses, no player doubled down on a six. In Donald Trump’s White House, the president looks to double down on his soft hand in Afghanistan. That’s a bad bet.”

Bannon departure tips trade scales in favor of White House ‘globalists’
The departure on Friday of Steve Bannon, the White House’s top economic nationalist, will likely tip the trade policy scales in favor of the Trump administration’s “globalist” faction, which could soften the stance toward two of Trump’s favorite targets: China and the North American Free Trade Agreement.
But after news that Trump had fired Bannon from his post as chief strategist, trade experts said it may take some time for National Economic Council Chairman Gary Cohn, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to start winning more debates on trade policy.
Bannon and White House Trade and Manufacturing Office director Peter Navarro were often allied in taking hardline anti-China stances over currency manipulation, steel tariffs and other trade issues, often opposed to Cohn, Mnuchin and Perdue, according to lobbyists who been involved in the debates.
The Cohn-led group proved more influential in the administration’s decisions in April not to label China a currency manipulator and to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement instead of terminating it.

The 14 most shocking comments from Trump’s Charlottesville news conference
He simply couldn’t help himself.
A day after President Donald Trump gave in to political pressure and denounced, by name, the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who rallied in Charlottesville this past weekend, he reversed course and again claimed “both sides” were to blame for the violence in the Virginia city.
After a brief round of remarks on his plans to revamp US infrastructure, Trump offered to take questions from reporters. Over the next 15 minutes, he defended racist demonstrators, claimed his initial statement was muted because he doesn’t like to speak before having all “the facts,” and suggested the movement to take down Confederate monuments around the country was an effort to “change history” and “change culture.”

Charlottesville: Least 1 dead as car ploughs into protesters: white supremacist rally in Virginia
US President Donald Trump has condemned “hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides” after one person died when a car ploughed into a group of anti-racism protesters at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Key points:
- At least 26 injured, one dead, driver of car taken into custody
- Charlottesville Mayor blames Trump for inflaming racial prejudices
- Violence the latest in a string of confrontations since Charlottesville voted to remove statue
At least 35 others were injured during clashes around the rally, leading Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe to declare a state of emergency.
“I have a message to all the white supremacists and the Nazis who came into Charlottesville today. Our message is plain and simple, go home, you are not wanted in this great commonwealth, shame on you, you pretend that you are patriots but you are anything but,” he said.
Charlottesville Police chief Al Thomas said the person killed by the car was a 32-year-old woman. He said some of the injured were in a critical condition.
Clashes erupted as white supremacists protesting against plans to remove the statue of Confederate general Robert E Lee clashed with counter-demonstrators in the college town, about two hours drive south-west of Washington DC.

#F1 Paul di Resta: Great job replace Massa. Very professional. [Beat Vettel F3 champ 2006]
What a turn of events for Paul di Resta. He came to Hungary as a Sky Sports pundit but will now get the chance to line up on the grid for Sunday’s race. The Scot, who famously beat Sebastian Vettel to the F3 championship in 2006, clearly feels he never got the opportunity to properly show what he could do in F1 during those three years at Force India. He’ll have a huge task to get up to speed immediately for qualifying in a car he’s never driven but opportunities like this are very rare in Formula One.

Wimbledon: Bethanie Mattek- Sands suffers horrific injury after slipping against Sorana Cirstea
THE All England Club insists it provided Bethanie Mattek-Sands with urgent medical assistance almost immediately after the doubles star suffered a sickening knee injury.
The American wildcard fell awkwardly during the third set of her Wimbledon second-round singles clash with Sorana Cirstea and spent several minutes screaming in agony.
“Please help me! Please! Please! F***!”” Mattek-Sands screamed as she clutched her right knee.
Her Romanian opponent was visibly shaken after going to the aid of the 32-year-old, who was targeting a rare doubles grand slam sweep in tandem with Lucie Safarova after their successes at the US, Australian and French Opens.
“F*** it hurts, f*** me it hurts. Have you given me any f***ing painkillers? These painkillers are not working,” she was heard to say before she was taken off the court, according to The Sun.
“Please knock me out, please knock me out.”
The injury to her knee was so gruesome that she asked the medics to cover it up with a towel.

CBO report puts Republican health care bill in jeopardy
The Senate Republican health care bill teetered on the edge of collapse Monday evening after the Congressional Budget Office released a devastating report on its impact and multiple Republicans announced they would not vote to advance the legislation.
The mood was tense and chaotic on Capitol Hill moments after the non-partisan agency predicted that the Republican proposal would result in 22 million more people becoming uninsured by 2026 years than under Obamacare.
Senate Republicans, many of whom are still undecided on whether to vote for the bill later this week, struggled to defend the legislation to mobs of reporters who flocked to them for initial reactions…
