Three dead in skydiving accident at Mission Beach, south of Cairns
Two men and a woman are dead after what is believed to be a mid-air collision between tandem and single skydivers at Mission Beach, south of Cairns.
A local resident said they had fallen onto the lawn of a property on Alexander Drive, about 1.5 kilometres north of the usual landing site.

US recall Cuba embassy staff, urges Americans not to travel following mysterious ‘attacks’ on diplomats
The United States is ordering more than half of US personnel to leave Cuba and will warn Americans against visiting the island nation, in a dramatic response to what they described as “specific attacks” on diplomats.

Nathan Lyon climbs another rung up wicket-takers list as he gives Australia hope in Bangladesh
When Nathan Lyon passed Hugh Trumble’s mark of 141 for the most number of Test wickets taken by an Australian off-spinner in Jamaica in June 2015, his teammates dubbed him the GOAT. You know how it goes: the Greatest (of his craft) Of All Time. By that measure, at least, the moniker stuck.
It was also the day when questions to him started changing. Instead of focusing on the present, he got quizzed on where he thought he could make it to by the end of it all. We never received much of an answer, Lyon defaulting to his familiar “team-first, stats-don’t-matter” formula.
But when probing him at the time, Lyon did concede to me there were a handful of bowlers that he would like to overtake. He wouldn’t specify who — happy to keep that to himself — yet it stuck with me that such a list existed. On another momentous day for him, it can’t hurt to guess. And I suspect it is timely…

North Korea Fires Short-Range Missiles From Its East Coast
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea launched several short-range missiles off its coast on Saturday, dashing hopes in Washington and Seoul that the country would restrain from provocations to help pave the way for dialogue.
The missiles blasted off from a coastal launching site and flew about 155 miles to the northeast before falling into the sea, the South Korean military said in a statement. Defense officials were analyzing data to determine what type of missiles were used, it said.
The launches occurred during a period of escalating tensions between the governmemt of Kim Jong-un and the Trump administration. American and South Korean forces began twice-yearly war games on Monday aimed at preparing for a possible attack by the North. The games continue until the end of August.

British Open: Jordan Spieth wins Claret Jug ahead of Matt Kuchar, Marc Leishman surges late
Jordan Spieth has survived a roller-coaster final round at the British Open to claim his third major title after beating fellow American Matt Kuchar by three strokes in a thrilling duel at Royal Birkdale.
Spieth carded a 1-under-par final round of 69 to finish on 12-under for the tournament but, after three days of consistent golf by the American, it was a remarkable day of highs and lows for the 23-year-old.
The Texan, who won the US Masters and US Open in 2015, joined Jack Nicklaus to become one of only two players to win three legs of the career grand slam before turning 24. Tiger Woods was 24 when he won his third different major.
Spieth began the day with a three-stroke lead but saw that evaporate on the front nine, where he made four bogeys and a birdie to enter the turn sharing the lead with Kuchar on 8-under, before he steadied himself and surged to victory.
Clutching the Claret Jug awarded to the winner, Spieth, the youngest American to win the British Open and the youngest from any country since a 22-year-old Seve Ballesteros in 1979, said his victory was “a dream come true”.
“I drank some wine from the Claret Jug when Zach Johnson won it two years ago and people said that was bad luck. I started to believe them too after nine holes today,” he said.
“I’m going to take this back to America which may upset a few of you all but I’ll return it. Thank you very much, what an incredible honour.”

Anti-IS fighter Ashley Dyball believed charged over disappearance of Brisbane man Samuel Thompson
Anti-Islamic State fighter Ashley Dyball has become the second person to be arrested and charged over the disappearance of Brisbane childcare worker Samuel Thompson, the ABC understands.
Dyball, a Queenslander, fought against IS forces in Syria.
Police have confirmed a 25-year-old Albany Creek man was taken into custody on Friday night and charged with murder and interfering with a corpse.
A 23-year-old Bald Hills man has already been charged with murder and interfering with a corpse.
Mr Thompson, 22, was last seen driving in Brisbane’s northern suburbs after leaving his apartment in Albion on March 7.
His distinctive car, a Ford Mustang with the licence plate SAMMO, was found abandoned near Byron Bay, in northern New South Wales, two days later.

NSW weather: Storm lashes central-west, BOM tells Sydney to prepare for wild Tuesday
New South Wales’ wild weather will continue on Tuesday, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warning up to 80 millimetres of rain and severe thunderstorms could lash Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
A savage storm moved over the state’s central-west on Monday, with heavy rain and golf-ball sized hailstones falling on some areas.
It was expected to continue overnight, with a severe weather warning issued for areas including Armidale, Orange, Mudgee, Bathurst, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Moree, Narrabri, Dubbo, Parkes, Wellington and Coonamble.
BOM forecaster Rebecca Kamitakahara said the action was expected to hit Sydney on Tuesday.
“In Sydney you could see some of the heavier rainfall in the morning,” she said.

Geraldton doctor Chamari Liyanage, who killed abusive husband, granted parole
Sri Lankan-born doctor Chamari Liyanage has been serving a four-year prison term after she was convicted of the manslaughter of her husband and fellow doctor Dinendra Athukorala.
Liyanage bludgeoned Dr Athukorala with a mallet while he slept at their Geraldton home in June 2014.
During Liyanage’s trial the court heard the couple’s five-year marriage was defined by the “worst kind” of escalating sexual, physical and emotional abuse.
The court heard Athukorala kept 13 terabytes of encrypted child exploitation and bestiality images.
Liyanage was acquitted of the more serious charge of murder.
