Landslide kills 23 in village in China

A rain-triggered landslide has hit a village in southwest China, killing 23 people and leaving two others missing.

The landslide hit Gengdi village in Sichuan province early on Tuesday.

Rescuers were able to pull one person out from the rubble, and four others had minor injuries.

The provincial government’s news office also says 71 houses were destroyed and a five-kilometre stretch of road was damaged.

West Coast Eagles back in top eight after 68-point rout of Brisbane

WEST Coast have snuck back into the top eight after emerging from a week of immense scrutiny to post a 68-point win over Brisbane at Domain Stadium this afternoon.

The Eagles were far from impressive, but guaranteed they remain in the race for finals by taking care of business against a youthful Lions line-up with a 17.11 (113) to 6.9 (45) triumph.

The comfortable victory was set up in the second quarter when West Coast booted five unanswered goals.

Criticised heavily this week for their fadeouts, the age of their list and the diminished output of key players, the Eagles started the contest sluggishly before finding more fluency in their game after quarter time.

The win did little to add to West Coast’s finals credibility, but lifted them above the Western Bulldogs into eighth spot ahead of a crucial showdown with St Kilda at Etihad Stadium next Sunday.

It was the first time West Coast had kicked at least 100 points in a game since round six and their biggest winning margin for the year.

People are comparing the Grenfell victims fund with the £369m Buckingham Palace refurbishment

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy earlier this week, Prime Minister Theresa May has pledged a £5 million fund to help the victims. Hundreds of Grenfell residents were forced to flee their homes leaving everything behind when a fire ripped through their building in the early hours of the morning.  Police have confirmed that 58 people are presumed dead in the disaster. That number is likely to rise.

Many Twitter users have decided to compare the £5 million Grenfell fund with the £369-million expected to be spent on a refurbishment of Buckingham Palace, over a 10-year period.

Housing fear as WA population rise slows | Perth Now

POPULATION growth in WA has fallen to its slowest rate on record as people head to other parts of the country for work.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the State was home to 2.6 million people at the end of September, with the population expanding by less than one per cent or 25,200 residents over the past year.

Over that time, an all-time high of 35,812 children were born in WA, but a record 38,592 people left for other parts of Australia, mainly Victoria and NSW. The population growth rate is lower than had been expected by the WA Treasury and suggests sluggish economic growth.

It is in contrast to Victoria, which is now the fastest-growing State with a population that has swelled by more than 127,000 to 6.1 million. NSW’s population has edged past 7.75 million and in Queensland it is nearly 4.9 million.

The sharp slowdown in WA’s population growth is making it tougher for the home-building sector as demand eases.
