Kim Wall case: Sub hatch cover caused death – suspect

An inventor charged with killing a journalist on board his submarine says she died in an accident.

Swedish journalist Kim Wall died by accident after being hit by a hatch cover on board a submarine, the Danish owner of the vessel has told a court.

Peter Madsen said he had been holding the heavy hatch – but then lost his foothold and the hatch shut.

Mr Madsen, 46, then said he had tried to bury Ms Wall, who was 30, at sea and intended to commit suicide.

He has been charged with killing Ms Wall, whose headless torso was found on 23 August in waters off Denmark.

She was last seen alive on 10 August as she departed with Mr Madsen on his home-made submarine to interview the inventor.

Prosecutors have accused Mr Madsen of murdering Ms Wall and mutilating her body. He denies this.

Testifying in Copenhagen’s court on Tuesday, Mr Madsen said Ms Wall was bleeding intensely after being hit by the 70kg (154lb) hatch.

“There was a pool of blood where she had landed.”

“In the shock I was in, it was the right thing to do,” he said, answering why he threw the journalist overboard.

Danish police believe Mr Madsen deliberately sank the 40-tonne submarine hours after the search for Ms Wall began on 11 August.

Her partner had reported that she had not returned from the trip.

Mr Madsen was rescued from waters between Denmark and Sweden.

Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif disqualified by court

The ruling comes after a corruption inquiry arising from the 2015 Panama Papers leak.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from holding public office following an investigation into corruption allegations.

The ruling comes after a probe into his family’s wealth following the 2015 Panama Papers dump linking Mr Sharif’s children to offshore companies.

Mr Sharif has consistently denied any wrongdoing in the case.

The verdict was handed down unanimously by a five-member bench in the court.

The court was filled to capacity on Friday, and there was heightened security in the capital, with tens of thousands of troops and police deployed.

One of the judges at the Supreme Court, Ejaz Afzal Khan, said that Mr Sharif was no longer “eligible to be an honest member of the parliament”, Reuters news agency reports.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan earlier advised Mr Sharif to accept Friday’s verdict.

The court has recommended anti-corruption cases against several individuals, including Mr Sharif, his daughter Maryam and her husband Safdar, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and others.

Netflix drops the full trailer for ‘Bright,’ its $90M+ potential blockbuster hit; OFFICIAL CLIP

Netflix may have its first blockbuster movie on its hands.

The new, full-length trailer for the upcoming Will Smith movie, “Bright,” from “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer, dropped during San Diego’s Comic-Con yesterday. The trailer gives viewers a longer look into the upcoming film, which takes place in a futuristic world where magical creatures like orcs and elves exist alongside humans, and face discrimination because of their differences.

The movie’s plot sees Smith playing LAPD cop Scott Ward, who’s paired with an orc partner, Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton) – one of the first orcs to be appointed to the police department. Despite their issues, the two bond while on a mission to track down a powerful weapon: a magic wand that everyone’s after.

Plot aside, Netflix’s “Bright” is one of its most ambitious deals to date, and not only because of its price tag or its magical creature-filled storyline.

The company had reportedly outbid Warner Bros teamed up with MGM, who were willing to go as high as $50 million, and PalmStar’s Kevin Frakes, who committed to a budget of $60 million for the movie.

Netflix swooped in with a promise to invest north of $90 million and stole the whole deal.

Netflix has done high-dollar deals before, in order to score big name talent and unique scripts. For example, the company paid $60 million for the Brad Pitt war comedy, “War Machine.” But that movie was the sort of thing that may not have even been made if not for Netflix. Even star Pitt noted during a press conference, if it did get made at all, “it would have been at one-sixth of the budget.”

Trump ‘completely f*****’ after James Comey memo, says White House official

donald-trumpOfficials in President Donald Trump’s administration have expressed despair after a series of scandals rocked the White House.

The New York Times reported on Tuesday the President had asked former FBI Director James Comey to end an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn during an Oval Office visit in February.

The newspaper said Mr Comey recorded the conversation in a memo written shortly afterwards.

The existence of the memo is the latest piece of evidence to suggest Mr Trump attempted to shut down investigations into his campaign’s dealings with the Russian government during the 2016 election.

The article came the day after it was reported Mr Trump had spontaneously revealed highly classified intelligence from a US ally to the Russian foreign minister.

“I don’t see how Trump isn’t completely f*****,” one senior official in Mr Trump’s administration reportedly told The Daily Beast.

Another told the publication they felt “like running down the hallway with a fire extinguisher” in response to the leaked memo.

The FBI and Justice Department declined to comment on the memo’s existence on Tuesday. The White House disputed the account.

The conversation is said to have occurred weeks after the FBI interviewed Lt Gen Flynn regarding his contacts with the Russian ambassador and after the acting attorney general, Sally Yates, warned the White House that Lt Gen Flynn had misled them about those conversations and could be vulnerable to blackmail.

Mr Flynn was forced to resign on 13 February after reports of the conversation between Ms Yates and officials in the White House.

The reports of Mr Trump’s request to Mr Comey renewed concerns from congressional Democrats about Mr Trump’s links to Russia.

“We are witnessing an obstruction of justice case unfolding in real time,” Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Judiciary Committee member and former federal prosecutor, said in a statement. He called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate.

Some Republicans also called for action, asking Mr Comey to speak to Congress and demanding that any memos or recordings of his conversations with the president be presented to them.

Mr Comey, appointed as FBI director in 2013 by President Barack Obama, spoke often about his desire to be as transparent as possible about FBI actions and about proving to the public that his agency was independent, competent and thorough.

“We’re not on anybody’s side, ever,” he said in a March speech. “We’re not considering whose ox will be gored by this action or that action, whose fortunes will be helped by this or that — we just don’t care and we can’t care.”

He riled administrations of both parties with his moral certitude and decisions that critics said strayed from ordinary protocol, such as his public announcement — without the involvement of the Justice Department — that the FBI would not recommend criminal charges against Hillary Clinton for her email use.

Testifying before Congress is familiar to Mr Comey, a former Justice Department official in the George W Bush administration.

As FBI director, he was accustomed to hours-long oversight hearings before Congress, including one a week before his firing. In 2007, he recounted to a rapt congressional audience the dramatic hospital room clash three years earlier with Bush officials over the approval of a domestic surveillance program.

Mr Comey was abruptly fired on 9 May, learning of the dismissal as he was giving a talk in Los Angeles. While the White House initially cited a Justice Department recommendation and Mr Comey’s very public handling of the Clinton email investigation as reasons, those explanations quickly shifted.

Mr Trump later admitted in a television interview about Mr Comey that he was bothered by “this Russia thing” and said he would have sacked him regardless of the Justice Department recommendation. He also tweeted a veiled threat warning the ex-director against leaking information.

Winx wins Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick for 17th successive victory

Winx just keeps on trucking, winning her 17th-straight race — the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick.

No Doubt, Hartnell, Happy Clapper and The United States went to the front early, but the back straight belonged to Winx as she won by five lengths.

Hugh Bowman rode her over the line first for the 15th time since the streak started in May of 2015, ahead of rival Hartnell and Sense Of Occasion.

Bowman said he had full confidence in the mare knowing her winning run was on the line.

“It’s really special,” he said.

“I’m really lost for words, she’s just put it all out there. And the amount of expectation on her, I know she’s ready and everything has gone to plan so far.

“I’m just there. I’ve got to savour the moment. I’m so proud of her.”

Trainer Chris Waller admitted the responsibility of caring for the world’s best mare was one he did not want to give to anyone else, but it had taken a toll.

“It is a big relief,” said Waller, who sat watching in relative seclusion as the crowd of 26,801 cheered Winx home…
