Trump makes mock threat to fire health chief, but swipe at Sessions is no joke
President Donald Trump has jokingly threatened to fire his health secretary if a crucial vote to repeal Obamacare fails.
Key points:
- Donald Trump threatens to tell Tom Price “you’re fired” if repeal fails
- Senator Shelley Moore Capito also singled out ahead of health care vote
- President also renews attack on Attorney-General Jeff Sessions
Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price may have taken some comfort from the President’s light-hearted tone, but Attorney-General Jeff Sessions had no such luxury.
Mr Trump took a remarkable new swipe at Mr Sessions on Monday, referring to him in a tweet as “beleaguered”, while privately musing about whether he should fire his longtime ally.
But the President seemed in a more genial mood when he told thousands of boy scouts at a national gathering in West Virginia that Mr Price “better get” the votes to begin debate on healthcare legislation on Tuesday (local time), lest Mr Trump repeat his tagline from The Apprentice, the reality show in which he once starred.
“Hopefully he’s going to get the votes tomorrow to start our path toward killing this horrible thing known as Obamacare,” Mr Trump said, before turning to Mr Price.

The former Conservative housing minister warned against increasing fire safety regulations to include sprinklers because it could discourage house building. As the death toll from the Grenfell Tower blaze rose to 12, it emerged Brandon Lewis, who was recently promoted to immigration minister, declined in 2014 to force building developers to fit sprinklers.
