JAL Boeing 777 forced into emergency landing after bird strike

A JAPANESE airliner has made an emergency landing after flames were seen spewing from one of its engines after a possible bird strike.

The Boeing 777 JL Flight 6 aircraft returned to Haneda International Airport in Tokyo after departing on a long-haul flight to New York after fire was seen erupting from one of its two engines.

The Japanese Ministry of Transport says the incident was possibly the result of a birdstrike on takeoff.

The JAL Boeing 777 can carry up to 250 passengers.

News of the flames was relayed to the pilot by cabin crew, who in turn reported to air traffic controllers that a bird strike may have taken place.

Japanese media is showing footage of the aircraft taking off, with several jets of flame bursting from its left engine.

It’s a slow ride home for motorists returning from the Easter long weekend, with major roads clogging with traffic.

Southbound traffic on the Pacific Motorway was banked up for about 10km on between Warnervale and Wyong after a Monday morning accident.

Further south on the highway, a multiple car crash near Mooney Mooney at about 11am closed southbound lanes for about 20 minutes.

In the state’s south, traffic is heavy along the Princes Highway near both Ulladulla and Berry, with cars banked up for several kilometres.

The Transport Management Centre said NSW motorists should expect heavy holiday traffic to increase throughout the day as people return home.

Three people have died on NSW roads during Easter, including a motorcyclist who crashed near Cobar on Saturday afternoon, with police urging drivers to take it slow on their return trip.

Drivers north of the border are also experiencing extremely long delays.

Basel Cafe shooting: two dead one fights for life

TWO gunmen opened fire inside a cafe in the Swiss city of Basel on Thursday, killing two people and leaving a third fighting for life. The men entered Cafe 56 at 8.15pm and unleashed a deadly flurry…

They then escaped in the direction of a nearby railway station.

The identity of the three victims had yet to be determined, authorities said.

Investigations are still ongoing but a police officer told The Associated Press: “This is a local incident. It has nothing to do with Islamists or terrorism.”

Crown Perth cuts 200 jobs

CROWN has cut more than 200 jobs at its Perth riverside complex in the wake of a dramatic drop-off of high-rollers and a fall in revenue.

The company confirmed the job losses to PerthNow Tuesday morning.

A Crown spokesperson said difficult trading conditions over the last few months had unfortunately resulted in a number of redundancies in the group.

“A priority of ours is to support those affected by these changes. 5,500 people continue to work at Crown Perth and we have a strong commitment to their development and welfare,” the spokesperson said.
