Dulse superfood improves eye sight, strengthen bones and lower blood pressure

Dulse is high in calcium and potassium for healthy bones, and beta-carotene for improved eyesightWhen it comes to superfoods, there’s always a new one on the market promising all kinds of nutritious benefits.

And now, there’s one that is said to improve your eye sight, bone strength and even your blood pressure.

Dulse, a nutrient dense red algae, is similar to seaweed but boasts a higher fibre and protein content.

Anna and Alex, Sydney-based dietitians from The Biting Truth, have spoken to Daily Mail Australia about the benefits found in this red superfood and revealed why we should all be including it in our diets.

Dulse is hailed as a superfood because of it's low levels of energy and fat, but is an overall health booster‘Of all the seaweed varieties, dulse is the highest in protein and also has a high level of iodine,’ the duo said.

‘We encourage people to incorporate different varieties of seaweed into their diet for their high levels of antioxidants and nutritional benefits.’

Iodine is a key mineral in for healthy thyroid function, and while Anna and Alex admit the research around dulse is still evolving, the red superfood can be a handy helper in keeping your thyroid healthy.

‘If you’re not getting enough iodine and have an under active thyroid, you’ll see that in weight gain and fatigue,’  the pair said.

‘Like everything, it’s all about variety so we wouldn’t recommend eating it every day, but a few times a week would benefit your diet.’

Dulse is hailed as a superfood because of it’s low levels of energy and fat, but is an overall health booster.

According to the pair, vegetables ‘grown in the sea have higher contents of protein and nutrients than those grown on land’ and dulse is also environmentally sustainable.

‘Dulse is so high in antioxidants and holds so many nutrients for the body that there is an all round benefit when you eat it,’ Anna and Alex said.

While those who eat meat get enough Vitamin B12, vegans and vegetarians often need to take supplements to receive enough B12 to be healthy.

Dulse is an alternative to these supplements as it naturally contains B12.

‘Dulse is also high in calcium and potassium for healthy bones, and it’s got lots of beta-carotene which is found in carrots, which is great for improved eyesight,’ both women added.

Perhaps an added bonus with Dulse is that it doesn’t need to be cooked, much like nori. You can buy it as flakes or in leaf form, and add it to your salads or as added flavour to dishes.

‘It’s typically dried and quite salty, so we add it to salads and in our salad dressings and even in dips,’ Anna and Alex said.

‘If you’re looking for that salty flavour, you can add dulse as a substitute to salt.’
