North Korea: Japan warns of ‘unprecedented, critical and imminent’ nuclear threat

Japan’s Defence Minister has told a high-level meeting that North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities have grown to an “unprecedented, critical and imminent” level.

Key points:

  • Itsunori Odonera called for “different responses” to North Korea’s nuclear tests
  • He did not say what responses were favoured by Japan
  • Countries around the world have been ramping up sanctions against North Korea
