Lewis Hamilton claims victory in the #F1 #SpanishGP🇪🇸

Lewis Hamilton, huffing and puffing into his cockpit radio, won an exciting Spanish Grand Prix after he and Sebastian Vettel went wheel-to-wheel.

The conflagration that we had hoped for since two of the finest drivers of their generation were instantly marked out as title favourites at the beginning of the season came to light here on a sunny Barcelona afternoon.

To begin at the start. Hamilton, on pole, was outpaced by Vettel, second on the grid. Vettel emerged through the first corner ahead of the Brit.

Vettel was strong up front, Hamilton keeping him honest but not an imminently large object in the Ferrari’s rear-view mirror.

Vettel was the first to stop, a slight problem with his front right tyre delaying him only fractionally. ‘This is the opportunity Lewis – give it everything you’ve got,’ came the instruction over the radio.

Hamilton was into the pits when leading by 14 seconds. He came out, reshod, seven seconds back. There was one other factor at this point – the other Mercedes, that of Valtteri Bottas, in Vettel’s way.

But the German pulled a great move on the Finn. He dummied him, feinting to go left before going right and emerging ahead at the first corner via a plume of soil as his tyre clipped the grass.

This was the warm-up act for lap 44. At this point both men had been in for a second stop, Hamilton’s first as the virtual safety car was deployed as Stoffel Vandoorne’s McLaren was lifted away after he had turned in on Felipe Massa’s Williams.

Ferrari perhaps tarried a little long with that stop. The upshot was that Vettel emerged from the pits only a fraction ahead of Hamilton; in fact, side-by-side. Vettel held off Hamilton valiantly. ‘That was dangerous,’ said Hamilton of Vettel’s elbows-out style. The stewards saw no need to interfere, and rightly so.

But Hamilton on faster soft tyres had more speed and eventually charged through. ‘No chance, no chance,’ bemoaned Vettel. ‘Like a train.’

The victory was Hamilton’s ‘What can I say?’ said the winner. ‘Fantastic job all weekend.’

So Hamilton cut Vettel’s lead to six points. It was the Brit’s second win of the season in five races. Vettel was second and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo third. Monaco next.

Fernando Alonso was 12th for McLaren. Bottas’s engine blew, a rare setback for Mercedes in that department. But they were still smiling in the garage, a day they and their driver were unbeatable.

Macron formally named next French president Elysee palace

Emmanuel Macron has arrived at the Elysee presidential palace in Paris to formally take power as the country’s 25th president.

The 39-year-old slowly marched alone, under a light rain, in the Elysee courtyard before shaking hands with his predecessor, Francois Hollande, at the front porch and the two men briefly posed for photographers.

The two met in the president’s office before Hollande’s departure, taking a last few minutes to discuss the most sensitive issues facing France – including the country’s nuclear codes.

Following the ceremony and military honours at the Elysee palace, Mr Macron will go the Tomb of the Unknown soldier, at the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Elysees Avenue, a tradition followed by all heads of states in France’s modern history.

Macron takes charge of a nation that, when Britain leaves the European Union in 2019, will become the EU’s only member with nuclear weapons and a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Macron will then make a speech in the Elysee reception hall in front of about 300 guests, officials and family members, including his wife Brigitte Macron.

After a five-year term, Hollande makes way for Macron, his former adviser then economy minister, in a ceremony at the Elysee presidential palace.

The Socialist leader, who described himself as ‘normal,’ was able to comfort and unite his nation during its worst terrorist attacks in decades.

Following the January 2015 attacks at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Hollande proved to be a statesman who brought world leaders together to link arms and march through Paris to defy extremism.

The emotional image of him hugging German Chancellor Angela Merkel, eyes shut, close to his cheek, was published around the world.

In November 2015, Hollande faced the deadliest attacks inflicted on France since World War II when 130 people were slain in Paris at restaurants, at a concert venue and outside a stadium.

That night, Hollande vowed to attack the Islamic State group without mercy as the jihadist group claimed responsibility.

‘When terrorists can commit such atrocities, they must know that they will face a determined, united France,’ he declared

France remains under a state of emergency since then. Last year, another tragic attack killed 86 victims in Nice on July 14, France’s national Bastille Day holiday.

Over the years, Hollande turned from what some considered flimsy custard to become an active, strong chief of war.

In 2013, he launched a military operation in Mali against al-Qaeda-linked Islamist extremists who he believed posed a threat to the African Sahel region.

The same year, he also sent troops the Central African Republic in an intervention aimed at disarming ex-rebels and militias that were pushing the country toward anarchy.

Since September 2014, France’s jet fighters have been bombing IS targets in Iraq as part of the U.S.-led coalition – and extended that operation to Syria beginning in September 2015.

During Hollande’s term, France achieved a seemingly unachievable triumph: uniting the world to seal a global climate pact.

The Paris climate agreement, adopted on December 12, 2015, was the culmination of more than a year of intense diplomatic efforts by France…

PRINCESS Diana’s former lover James Hewitt suffers heart attack + stroke

 

PRINCESS Diana’s former lover James Hewitt was left fighting for life after suffering a heart attack and stroke that required emergency surgery.

It’s been revealed that doctors gave the 58-year-old only a small chance of recovery after the major health scare.

The Mirror newspaper said Hewitt fell ill two weeks ago. He had been waiting for treatment for a pre-existing illness, which hasn’t been disclosed, when things took a turn for the worse.

“He was all set for a procedure when he had a heart attack,” a relative said.

“He had a pre-existing illness, then got seriously ill. Suddenly it got very critical and he was rushed to hospital. The family were concerned.”

Further complications saw Hewitt rushed into surgery, the paper revealed, and he was kept in intensive care.

He is expected to remain in care at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for some weeks. The relative said he was recovering well.

The former Army officer had a several-year affair with Princess Diana while she was still married to Prince Charles.

They met in London in 1986 when they were both in their mid-20s. The romance began a few years later but they parted ways when Hewitt was deployed to Iraq during the Gulf War in 1991.

Hewitt spoke out in March about persisting rumours that he is the biological father to Prince Harry, Diana and Charles’ younger son.

“No I’m not,” he told Channel Seven’s Sunday Night.

When asked if the three decades of speculation was difficult, Hewitt replied: “It’s worse for him, probably, poor chap.”

Trump brings Putin into Korea crisis after missile landed 60 miles of Vladivostok

Donald Trump made an unexpected reference to Russia after North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Sunday.

‘The President has been briefed on the latest missile test by North Korea,’ a statement from the White House read.

‘With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil – in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan – the President cannot imagine that Russia is pleased.

‘North Korea has been a flagrant menace for far too long. South Korea and Japan have been watching this situation closely with us. The United States maintains our ironclad commitment to stand with our allies in the face of the serious threat posed by North Korea.

‘Let this latest provocation serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against North Korea,’ the statement concluded.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently in Beijing for a two-day ‘Belt and Road’ conference hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The missile took off from Kusong, which is northwest of Pyongyang, where North Korea previously test-launched an intermediate-range missile.

US Pacific Command says the flight was not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The projectile was launched at around 5.30am on Sunday and flew about 435 miles, according to South Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff. Other reports claim the missile traveled 500 miles.

‘The South and US are analyzing more details about the missile,’ it said in a statement without elaborating. It is thought that the missile reached an altitude of 1,250 miles.

North Korea attempted but failed to test-launch ballistic missiles four consecutive times in the past two months. Nevertheless, the country has conducted a variety of missile testings since the beginning of last year at an unprecedented pace.

Weapons experts and government officials believe North Korea has accomplished some technical progress with those tests.

This launch is the first since liberal president Moon Jae-in took office in South Korea on Wednesday, saying dialogue and increased pressure must be used to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula and to stop North Korea’s weapons pursuit.

President Jae-In has summoned an emergency meeting with his national security advisors, his spokesman said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also slammed the missile launch as ‘totally unacceptable’ and a ‘grave threat’ to Tokyo.

‘We strongly protest against North Korea,’ he said.

Senior North Korean diplomat Choe Son Hui said that the country is willing to talk to the US and the Trump administration ‘under the right conditions.’

When asked if North Korea was also preparing to talk with the new government in South Korea, Hui said: ‘We’ll see.’

Hui did not elaborate on what the conditions in question might be, but her comments raise the possibility that North Korea and the US could return to negotiations for the first time since 2008, when six-nation talks over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program fell apart.
