Western Derby 47: Slick Eagles outpoint Dockers to win first clash at Optus Stadium by eight points

Battle of the giants. After a very West Australian week – bickering over the name on the medal for best afield, West Coast and Fremantle played each other to a standstill at Optus Stadium yesterday and two South Australians shared the last Glendinning Medal.

West Coast did not so much out-last Fremantle as out-clean them. The Eagles’ 13.11 (89) to 12.9 (81) win was the result of slicker ball movement, cleaner ball handling.

Their captain Shannon Hurn won his second his second Glendinning Medal in as many derbies, his 30 disposals off half back intercepting countless Fremantle attacks. When you threw in Jeremy McGovern alongside him, the Dockers were cut off at the pass.

Fremantle’s own derby specialist Lachie Neale had 35 disposals including 16 in contests. When Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe could not quite impose himself on after half-time thanks to the efforts of Elliot Yeo, Neale was Fremantle’s driver and the one that kept them coming.

This was a hell of a match to mark one hell of an occasion in front of one hell of a crowd.
