Ferrari + Mercedes set for a bidding war for Max Verstappen? $30million-a-year contract?

‘Ferrari and Mercedes will harden up their interest in the Dutchman by making him an offer to become one of the richest drivers in the sport’s history with a £20million-a-year contract,’ is the eye-catching claim from the Evening Standard.

Kevin Eason writes that the price for Verstappen ‘ratcheted up with every lap’ at the Malaysia GP and that Mercedes are in pole position for the 20-year-old thanks to their consecutive world titles and Jos Verstappen’s close ties with Toto Wolff.

‘Ferrari will not give up hope, though,’ the report adds. ‘And will make an offer when Verstappen’s Red Bull contract runs out next year despite the likely opposition of Sebastian Vettel, whose relationship with Red Bull’s tyro is strained after a series of on-track incidents.

‘Ferrari feel that Verstappen is closer to the Michael Schumacher mould with his fearless style.’

Verstappen is believed to be paid around £5m a year by Red Bull but his wage could significantly increase with a move, and Christian Horner admits he faces a struggle to hang onto him once his contract expires at the end of 2018.
