Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive, under decree issued by King Salman

Saudi King Salman issues a decree saying women in the ultra-conservative kingdom will be allowed to drive by June next year.

Key points:

  • Saudi women will be allowed to drive for the first time from June 2018
  • Women’s rights activists have been lobbying for the change since the 1990s
  • Ultra-conservative clerics argued the move would “corrupt society and lead to sin”
