After a soaking through Thursday night and Friday that included wind gusts of up to 107km/h at Cape Leeuwin and 93km/h on Rottnest and more than 60mm of rain at Bickley, the South West of the state is again set to be lashed tonight.

A severe weather warning remains in place for people in the Lower West, South West, South Coastal, South East Coast and parts of the Great Southern and Central Wheatbelt districts, with showers and winds set to increase into the night.

Winds of 100km/h could hit the metropolitan area and gusts of more than 125km/h are being forecast for coastal areas between Bunbury and Walpole.

WA Labor’s Darling Range candidate Colleen Yates resigns

COLLEEN Yates has resigned as Labor’s candidate for the seat of Darling Range, after facing questions over her academic credentials.

In a statement this afternoon, Ms Yates said it was with “deep regret” she announced her resignation.

“I joined the Labor Party just 11 months ago because I was inspired by the new McGowan Government and the sense of positive change it was bringing to Western Australia,” she said.

“I stepped down from my job as a Chief Executive Officer to run for Darling Range. I was ready to throw my heart and soul into the campaign. I was in it, to win it.

“I knew running in this by-election would bring an increased level of scrutiny on the candidates, but I wasn’t prepared for what came.”

WA Crews fighting Torndirrup National Park bushfire brace for strong winds

FIREFIGHTERS are currently strengthening containment lines to a bushfire which burnt through 300ha in the Torndirrrup National Park yesterday.

The Department of Biodioversity Conservation and Attractions advised this morning the advice level remains in place for residents in the vicinity of Barrass Road near the Torndirrup National Park.

The fire is not yet contained after escaping from a prescribed burn yesterday at about 2pm.

Parks and Wildlife crews and City of Albany volunteer brigades worked overnight with favourable conditions to strengthen the eastern flank to protect Little Grove residents.

City of Albany community emergency services manager Brendan Gordon said the fire reached within an estimated 200-300m of homes.

High winds and heavy rainfall hits much of #Perth and across WA as storms arrive

THOUSANDS were left without power tonight as predicted storms and heavy rains lashed down – spelling the end of a 17-day dry spell.

Lightning could be seen across much of the state as a storm front moved in early this evening and within an hour or so heavy rains had filled up gauges around the state.

Mandurah copped the brunt of the early rain across the metropolitan area registering 8.8mm between 5.30pm and 8.10pm and that didn’t ease up, with the gauge filling up to 26.6mm by 10pm.

Pleading that they themselves are victims, the women were given 10 minutes to beg for their lives before judges decided their sentence.

Many of them find little sympathy with the Iraqi judiciary and locals and are despised for their support of their militant husbands, who tore the country apart between 2014 and 2017.

French citizen Djamila Boutoutao, 29, appeared in court last month and claimed: “I thought I had married a rapper. It was only when we arrived in Turkey for a week-long ‘holiday’ that I discovered my husband was a jihadist.”
